Volunteer group Cats of McKinley shared a glimpse of community cat Ghost‘s journey from being a street cat to a beloved feline, as a tribute to the mauled animal.
The group uploaded a video on Wednesday, April 22, showing how the feline became a community cat that they regularly fed and cared for, before she was attacked by huskies being walked in the area.
They said they first found Ghost hanging out in a footbridge, initially hesitant during a “regular feeding day.”
“Ghost was a careful cat. Always watching from a distance. High above us — untouchable, unseen, and silent. The closed footbridge became her only fortress,” the group said in an Instagram post.
“We never thought she would come close to us. But little by little, she did. She started waiting for us. Following our steps from a distance. Slowly learning that not every human meant harm. Until one day — she stayed,” it added.
The group said they eventually found Ghost hanging out in “open spaces” and that she would “approach without hesitation.”
“It wasn’t just food that kept her stay. It was the safety and consistent kindness of the entire community that became her new fortress,” it said.
“We thought maybe one day, she would find a home. That she would continue to grow into a life without fear. But that night came first,” the group added, referring to the fateful night of April 16 when a male individual let his huskies attack the cat.
The attack caused injuries that led to complications, ultimately resulting in her death.
“Since then, we’ve kept asking ourselves: What if she had kept hiding like before? What if she had found a home sooner? What if the world had been just a bit safer for her?” the group said.
It then said that “responsible pet ownership [saves] lives.”
“Ghost was our dear Puspin friend. She was part of our everyday life at McKinley West. When she was gone, a part of us went with her too,” the group said.

The group previously assured the public that it was taking steps to file a case to seek accountability following the incident.
Ghost, described as one of their “kindest” community cats, was mauled by huskies being walked by a male individual around midnight on April 16 along Le Grand Avenue in McKinley, Taguig City.
A rescue group said the incident may be punishable under the Animal Welfare Act, which penalizes acts of cruelty against animals, especially when they result in death.
