A community cat in Taguig City reportedly lost its life after being attacked by pet dogs that were being walked by their owner.

Cats of McKinley, a volunteer group in Bonifacio Global City that feeds community cats in the area, raised awareness about a community cat that was attacked by huskies while they were being walked by a male individual.

Reports said the incident happened around midnight on Thursday, April 16, in front of Tokyo Tokyo along Le Grand Avenue in McKinley.

Kate Madrigal, who uploaded a video of the cat, said the owner, who was walking three huskies, did nothing and walked away after the incident.

She added that the black-and-white feline sustained injuries following the attack.

The community cat, a female feline named “Ghost,” was rushed to a veterinary clinic by witnesses, but later died due to complications.

Cats of McKinley said Ghost was one of their “kindest community cats.”

The group also appealed to dog owners to be responsible and keep their dogs properly restrained.

“We urge everyone to please keep your dogs on a leash at all times and if you cannot handle your dogs during walks, do not bring them outside,” the volunteer group wrote in a Facebook post.

“This is not only for the safety of our community cats, but for the safety of people and other animals around you. Incidents like this are entirely preventable if we practice responsible pet ownership,” it added.

The group also said it was “not the first time” that huskies have attacked their community cats, adding that “it needs to stop.”

It assured the public that it is currently consulting with an animal welfare group to determine the appropriate steps in holding the dog owner accountable.

Meanwhile, a rescue group said the incident may be punishable under the Animal Welfare Act, which penalizes the torture of animals, especially if it results in death.

“Hindi ito simpleng ‘aksidente.’ Negligence ito,” Ginger Friends PH said.

“Sa ilalim ng Animal Welfare Act (RA 8485, amended by RA 10631), may pananagutan ang pet owners kapag ang alaga nila ay nakasakit ng ibang hayop o tao dahil sa kapabayaan,” it added.

“Be responsible. May batas,” the group said.

Animal cruelty is illegal under the Animal Welfare Act, which states that it is “unlawful for any person to torture any animal,” among other provisions.

Those found guilty of cruelty, maltreatment, or neglect may face imprisonment and/or fines.
