As more Filipinos take steps to prepare for natural disasters by packing their own emergency “Go Bags, several organizations are reminding the public not to forget about their pets.

The UPMV K9 Corps, a volunteer organization based in UP Diliman, recently shared tips on how pet owners can build a disaster-ready “Go Bag” for their four-legged companions.

Their post highlights the importance of including basic necessities like pet food, water, leashes and medical records, along with comfort items to help pets cope with the stress of an evacuation.

The reminder comes amid renewed public attention on disaster readiness following recent strong earthquakes across the country and the distribution of emergency kits by some local governments.

“In times of disaster, a pet emergency kit or Go Bag ensures your furry companions have everything they need to stay safe and cared for,” the organization said on October 11.

The Petish Animal Clinic also shared an infographic listing the essentials pet owners should pack in their pet’s emergency “Go Bag.”

The Zootopia Animal Wellness Center Corp also released a list of items for a pet-specific first-aid kit.

The Philippine Information Agency Metro Manila likewise shared infographics listing essential items for pets in case evacuation becomes necessary.

“Walang Iwanan! Sa panahon ng sakuna, tiyaking ligtas rin ang ating mga alagang hayop. Siguruhing may Pet Go Bag din sila kung kinakailangang lumikas,” it said.

Filipinos, especially in Metro Manila, have been preparing their own “Go Bags” in light of recent strong earthquakes reported in various parts of the country.

These emergency-preparedness kits are meant to hold enough supplies to sustain one person for at least three days while awaiting rescue or relief.

Typical contents include canned goods, bottled water, a first-aid kit, chargers, whistles, flashlights and other essential items.

Metro Manila is among the high-risk areas that could be severely affected if the West Valley Fault generates a major earthquake, potentially as strong as magnitude 7.2.

Experts said the fault is due to movement sometime before, during, or after the year 2058.
