Google is celebrating 20 years of Google Translate, a tool that has grown from an experiment into a global platform now used by over a billion people every month.

“Twenty years ago, Google Translate began with a mission to help people understand one another. What started as an experiment is now a global bridge, turning the science of language into the magic of human connection for over a billion people,” the tech giant said in a release dated April 29.

Today, Google says Translate processes “1 trillion words every month,” highlighting its massive scale in global communication. The service now supports nearly 250 languages, covering about 95% of the world’s population, including endangered and indigenous languages.

The company also highlighted how artificial intelligence has reshaped the tool, particularly through real-time communication features. It said “Live Translate” preserves “the speaker’s original tone while providing real-time audio translation,” allowing more natural conversations across languages.

Google added that newer AI models enable “natural, real-time dialogue that tracks context and nuance,” making conversations more fluid and accurate.

Beyond communication, Translate is also widely used for learning. The company said about one-third of mobile users use the app as a language learning tool, while many use its Practice feature to build speaking confidence.

Newer features such as Google Lens and Circle to Search also allow users to instantly translate text from menus, signs, and on-screen content, expanding its everyday use cases.

Google noted shifting language trends as well, with rising translation demand for language pairs such as English-to-Indonesian and English-to-Bengali, alongside the dominant English-to-Spanish usage.

The company also pointed to cultural changes in how people use translation tools, including decoding slang and even translating text into emojis.

Despite these changes, Google said its core mission remains the same. The most translated phrase across the platform remains “thank you.”

“After 20 years, Translate’s mission remains unchanged: removing barriers so the world can understand, and be understood by, everyone.”
