“Normalize this parallel universe.”
Such were the comments on a viral comic strip depicting a different kind of Filipino family reunion, one where remarks are kinder and less intrusive.
Sskait Comics shared the comic strip on Monday, December 15, featuring four scenarios in a “parallel universe” of a family reunion, where older relatives are more empathic and supportive of the younger ones.
In one scenario, a godfather asks his godchild about their mental health.
In another, an aunt tells her niece she shouldn’t feel pressured to get into a relationship.
In a third, an uncle expresses support for his niece’s pursuits.
In the final strip, an aunt compliments her niece’s appearance, telling her she “looked good” instead of making negative comments about her weight.
“Family reunions in a parallel universe,” Sskait wrote in a Facebook post.
The post has garnered 20,000 likes and reactions, 2,200 shares and 142 comments, with some expressing hope that it could translate into real-life scenarios.
“I just wish that uncles and aunts became introvert or apathetic, so that they won’t ask repeated questions,” an online user commented.
“Hayy, if people can just be kinder,” another wrote.
“Normalize this parallel universe in reunions,” a different Pinoy said.
“Libre lang ho maging mabuting tao,” another commented.
It is common for Filipinos to receive advice or comments about their weight, appearance, work, or personal lives from relatives during gatherings, especially after not seeing them for some time.
Some Filipinos have encouraged others to be more mindful and considerate when interacting with relatives, particularly those they are not very close to.
This includes offering support and refraining from giving unsolicited advice or overly critical remarks.
