A post about the death of a neighbor who asked a man about marriage generated buzz on social media.

An X (formerly Twitter) user shared a post featuring a photo of a man with the text, “Lalaki, [pinatay] ang kapitbahay dahil sa palaging tanong kung bakit hindi pa siya nag-aasawa!”

“Oh, sino pa magtatanong,” the user said in the caption with a rolling-on-the-floor laughing emoji.

The post has earned 1,600 likes, 314 reposts, and nearly 40 replies from Filipinos, many of whom expressed relatability to questions about one’s civil status, especially during family gatherings and reunions.

“Sa family gatherings, hindi maiwasan itanong ‘yan! Nakakasawa na,” one commented.

“Nangingialam kasi sa buhay ng iba… twing tinatanong ako ng ganyan, ang sagot ko lang e, ‘Ikaw ba magpapakain sa magiging pamilya ko?’ or ‘Pinakikialaman ko ba ang buhay mo?!'” another said.

“Kidding aside, I think people should really mind their own business. I mean, it really infuriates people when they’re asked the same question over and over,” a different Pinoy wrote.

“Ano bang pwedeng sagot dito, asar na rin talaga ako,” another X user commented with a smiling-face-with-tear emoji.

A similar post also circulated on Facebook after being uploaded last June.

The post also included quotes in Filipino.

“Inamin ng suspek ang krimen at sinabi na labis na siyang nairita dahil palagi siyang tinatanong ng biktima kung kailan siya mag-aasawa, lalo na’t wala pa siyang kasintahan. ‘Wala pa nga akong nobya, paano ako mag-aasawa?’ ani pa ng suspek,” it said.

While the post drew attention from some Filipinos who found the issue of persistent questions about civil status relatable, the incident actually occurred in Indonesia.

In August 2024, reports said that Parlindungan Siregar, a 45-year-old man, killed his 60-year-old neighbor, Asgim Irianto, after reportedly feeling hurt and annoyed by the latter’s repeated questions about why he was not married.

According to The Straits Times, Siregar fatally attacked his neighbor, a retired civil servant. Reports said the victim attempted to flee, but Siregar allegedly pursued him and continued the assault, which later proved fatal.

The incident resonated with some Filipinos online, as it touched on a familiar social experience. It is not uncommon for relatives in the Philippines to ask personal questions during holiday gatherings and reunions, particularly about one’s civil status.

Common inquiries include when someone plans to get married or whether they have a partner, while others may comment on physical appearance, such as weight.
