The comments of lawyer Lorna Kapunan, actress Bea Alonzo‘s legal counsel, about marriage sparked discussions among Filipinos.
Kapunan was asked by the media on Tuesday, July 14, about the wedding of her client to Puregold Price Club Inc. president Vincent Co, which took place the previous day.
“I wish you well, Bea,” she said .
The civil wedding was held in Makati City and officiated by Makati Mayor Nancy Binay, who confirmed that the couple is now married.
The civil wedding came amid speculations that the couple was supposed to get married in Spain in May, where Bea is a legal resident through a Golden Visa.
Rumors circulated that the marriage had been delayed due to various issues, including an alleged prenuptial agreement that supposedly contained provisions on the custody of future children, behavioral restrictions and the couple’s residency arrangements.
Public discussions about the couple’s wedding later died down, but by late June, allegations resurfaced that a “civil wedding” would take place.
Kapunan on Tuesday also addressed speculations surrounding the alleged prenuptial agreement.
“Actually, I wish I did,” the lawyer said when asked if she prepared the contract.
Kapunan added that she has “no personal knowledge” of the prenuptial agreement signed by the couple.
“Well, putting on my lawyer’s hat, I advise all of you girls here: Don’t get married,” she said in jest.

Kapunan’s remarks, particularly her advice made in jest, caught the attention of online users, especially in a country where divorce is not yet legally allowed.
“I’m 26 with no prospects anytime soon. Why is the first thing that my mom tells me about marriage, ‘everything you own will become his. Do you want that?'” an online user commented.
“Panyera naman. ‘Wag na tayo mandamay,” another joked, adding a laughing emoji.
“Bye, I like her, HahahahhaHAHAHAHA,” a different X user wrote.
“Basta ako, happy ako sa married life ko. Kontento ako kung anong meron ako. That advice is not one size fits all naman. Don’t get married kung hindi ka handa, hindi ka sigurado sa taong pakakasalan mo. Dapat balance lang ang mga aspects na kailangan sa pag-aasawa,” another Pinoy said.
“Kung praktikal ka, sundin mo si attorney. Noon, masarap magpakasal, ngayon stressed lang ‘yan. In all aspect, walang divorce dito satin, kaya mag-isip-isip,” a different Facebook user commented.
“Marriage is not for the weak. So before kayo magpakasal, make sure kaya niyo. ‘Cause marriage is a commitment. Dapat pipiliin niyo ang isa’t isa araw-araw, hanggang sa dulo,” another Pinoy said.
The Philippines is one of the two countries that do not yet allow divorce, the other being Vatican City.
Divorce is the act of legally dissolving a marital relationship, leaving both parties to remarry if they desire.
The country only allows couples to file for an annulment, legal separation, declaration of nullity of a void marriage, judicial separation of property, and judicial recognition of foreign divorce.
Prenuptial agreement
Lawyer Joey Garcia, who is also part of Bea’s legal counsel, confirmed on Tuesday that the couple had a prenuptial agreement.
“The earlier reports suggesting that there was any dispute, hesitation, or unresolved issue concerning a prenuptial agreement are not accurate,” he said in a statement.
“As counsel, I can confirm that the parties freely, knowingly and voluntarily executed their prenuptial agreement, and the same was properly signed by both Ms. Bea Alonzo and Mr. Vincent Co prior to their marriage,” Garcia added.
“There was no legal impediment arising from the execution of the agreement,” he further said.
The confirmation of the couple’s wedding came after talent manager Ogie Diaz claimed that the two had quietly tied the knot in a civil ceremony attended by only a few witnesses.
A prenuptial agreement is a legally binding contract that establishes the property regime of future spouses and governs their financial and property relations during the marriage.
It outlines the terms of ownership, management and division of assets, as well as the handling of debts between the parties.
Through a prenuptial agreement, couples may define their property relations according to their own terms.
Without such an agreement, properties owned by the spouses before the marriage and those acquired during the marriage generally fall under a community property regime or are jointly owned by both spouses.
