Google Wallet, the company’s digital wallet solution, is now available for Android users in the Philippines, offering a way to store payment cards, loyalty passes, boarding passes, and other digital items in one app.

The app allows users to pay at contactless terminals using Android phones or Wear OS devices, and supports online and in-app payments through Google Pay at participating merchants like Shopee.

Travelers can also add boarding passes from airlines such as Philippine Airlines and AirAsia, and receive notifications for gate or schedule changes.

Prep Palacios, country manager of Google Philippines, said that the arrival of the digital wallet underscores their “enduring commitment to accelerating financial inclusion and fueling the next chapter of the Philippines’ dynamic digital economy.”

“The Philippines is a nation on the move—vibrant, mobile-first, and rapidly embracing digital life. Google Wallet is launching right alongside that energy, offering Pinoys a single, secure digital space to manage their payments, travels, and daily transactions. Whether it’s the quick ‘tap-and-pay’ for your favorite restaurant, booking a trip across the islands, or shopping online, Google Wallet keeps your essentials protected and always at your fingertips,” Palacios said.

How it works

Google Wallet acts as a “digital container,” storing payment cards while Google Pay handles the actual transactions. Users can also store:

  • Boarding passes and flight bookings
  • Event and cinema tickets
  • Loyalty cards and vouchers (e.g., IKEA Family card, Mang Inasal vouchers)
  • Digital car keys
  • Transit tickets and access (including MRT-3 in Manila and modern jeepneys in Cebu and Mandaue City)

Setting up Google Wallet involves downloading the app from the Google Play Store, adding a card or digital item, and completing a verification process with the issuing bank. Once added, payments can be made by tapping the device at supported terminals.

Security features

The digital wallet uses tokenization to protect transactions, replacing card numbers with device-specific tokens and dynamic security codes. Adding a card requires bank verification, and access is protected by the device’s screen lock. Lost devices can be locked, wiped, or secured via Google’s Find My Device feature. Users can also manage data and privacy settings through the app or via Google’s My Activity portal.

Regulatory and industry support

The launch has been backed by both public and private institutions.

“The BSP promotes financial stability and maintains a forward-looking stance on payment innovation. We recognize the role of TSPs in advancing payments digitalization, consistent with the development goals under the Philippine Development Plan (PDP) 2023-2028. While we do not consider technology service providers as operators of payment systems, we underscore that BSP-supervised institutions (such as banks and e-money issuers) engaging these providers remain fully responsible for managing associated risks,” BSP Deputy Governor Mamerto Tangonan noted.

Department of Information and Communications Technology Secretary Henry Aguda said the launch also aligns with their agency’s digitalization agenda.

“Secure and interoperable digital payment solutions like this bring government, commerce, and citizens closer together, ensuring no Filipino is left behind in the digital economy,” he said.

Lito Villanueva, founding chairman of FinTech Alliance PH and RCBC Executive Vice President & Chief Innovation and Inclusion Officer, emphasized the potential for financial inclusion.

“Google Wallet’s arrival reinforces our collective vision for a fully digital and financially inclusive Philippines. This collaboration with Google Wallet alongside the BSP and the DICT demonstrates how strong public-private partnerships can expand access, enhance trust, and deliver world-class digital payment experiences for every Filipino from urban centers to the countryside,” Villanueva said.

Meanwhile, here are the supported banks and services of the digital wallet.

  • Payment cards: ChinaBank, East West Bank, RCBC, Zed, GoTyme, Maya, UnionBank, Wise, GCash
  • Airlines: Philippine Airlines, AirAsia, Cathay Pacific, Jetstar, Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Scoot, Thai Airways
  • Ticketing & loyalty: Trip.com bookings, Ticket2Me and TicketNet, IKEA, Mang Inasal
  • Transit: MRT-3, modern jeepneys in Cebu and Mandaue City, bus tickets via Easybook; Beep App support coming soon

For users, the key takeaway is that Google Wallet consolidates multiple digital essentials into a single, secure app on Android devices, with practical applications for payments, travel and loyalty programs.
