The Department of Energy (DOE) reminded drivers to reserve charging stations for actual electric vehicles (EVs) instead of using them as regular parking spots.
On Thursday, October 30, the agency shared an infographic about “ghost charging”, featuring a vehicle with an astonished expression and a speech bubble saying, “boo.”
“Ghost charging happens when an EV driver parks and plugs in their car just to save the spot, not to actually charge,” the DOE said.
“No to ghost charging! Give way to other EV users who need to charge, and stay safe on the road,” it added.
Some EV charging stations are located in parking lots, which has led some drivers to mistakenly treat them as regular parking spaces, despite clear signage indicating they are reserved for charging.
In an April 2025 report, the DOE said the Philippines has 912 publicly accessible charging stations, mostly concentrated in Metro Manila.
Energy Utilization Management Bureau Director Patrick Aquino said the agency aims to deploy over 7,000 EV charging stations by 2028.
