Foreshadowing?

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s new website for reporting flood control issues sparked online talk about an old “Bubble Gang” comedy segment.

On Monday, August 11, Marcos launched the “Sumbong sa Pangulo” website, where citizens can track and report flood control projects, as part of his administration’s push to investigate irregularities amid repeated flooding this monsoon season.

The website allows Filipinos to directly report any non-operational or anomalous flood control projects in their areas to the president.

Marcos said that the government will take action against anyone found involved in corruption or embezzlement of public funds in these projects.

“We need the citizens to play their part, their civic duty to report to the government what they see as being wrong,” he said in a press conference before.

“Lahat ng hinaing ninyo — masama loob ninyo, nagre-reklamo kayo, frustrated kayo dahil nakikita ninyo wala naman kayong malapitan. Ito na ‘yung chance ninyo. Mayroon na tayong website,” Marcos added.

“Ang isusulat ninyo doon sa report, ako mismo ang babasa. ‘Yan ang asahan ninyo, babasahin ko bawat isa,” he continued.

“Basta ilagay ninyo ‘yung barangay ninyo at lalabas na lahat ng flood control project,” the president said.

In his fourth SONA, Marcos ordered an audit for the country’s flood control projects, linking corruption to the flooding experienced by Filipinos after the southwest monsoon and Tropical Cyclones Crising (Wipha), Dante (Francisco) and Emong (Co-May) last July.

Meanwhile, his new website drew attention from some Filipinos who noted its name sounded similar to Michael V‘s “Sumbong Sumbong kay Bonggang Bongbong.”

“Bongbong” is Marcos’ nickname.

“Michael V. / Bubble Gang foreshadowing,” a Filipino said in a Reddit community on Monday, sharing a viral Facebook post that mentioned the likeness.

“An image you can hear,” another online user said, sharing a screengrab of the “Bubble Gang” segment and juxtaposing it with a report about Marcos’ website.

“Nakakapanghinayang naman na di tinawag na ‘Sumbong Sumbong kay Bonggang Bonggang BongBong,'” another commented.

“Missed the opportunity to name it ‘Sumbong sumbong kay bonggang Bongbong,'” a different Pinoy wrote.

The “Sumbong Sumbong kay Bonggang Bongbong” was a reality investigative program which was a segment in “Bubble Gang.”

The comedy bit was said to be a parody of GMA’s “Imbestigador” and Ben Tulfo’s “Bitag.” It aired from 2008 to 2013, 2016 to 2018, and 2022 to 2023.

It was hosted by Bongbong, a character who is a parody of the Tulfo brothers. — with reports from Philstar.com/Jean Mangaluz
