MANILA, Philippines — A video of a foreigner being attacked in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, has drawn attention online after he was reportedly heard making derogatory remarks toward LGBTQ+ individuals.

On June 16, traditionally celebrated by the LGBT community as Pride Month, witnesses said the foreigner began calling some people drinking at a bar “gay.” Some LGBTQ+ individuals then approached and confronted him.

Amid the confrontation, the foreigner allegedly pushed people who came near him. A commotion followed, and he was struck on the head with a chair after he called a transwoman “bakla.”

The foreigner did not go to a hospital or seek medical assistance after the incident, according to the report.

A video of the confrontation was later uploaded to a Reddit community, where it drew nearly 4,000 upvotes and more than 350 comments from Filipinos.

“T**na, astig na astig talaga ako sa mga trans or crossdresser na babaeng-babae tapos nambubugbog ng mga sira ulo, hahaha,” a Redditor wrote.

“I don’t condone physical fights, but man… If you’re gon’ go out of your way to insult someone or a group of people, you’re asking for it. And the person who attacks you, in my opinion, is completely justified. Lalo na ‘pag foreigner ka. Don’t be messing with the locals,” another user said.

“Don’t let anyone disrespect you in your own country. Tapos. Kudos ke atecco!” exclaimed a different Redditor.

“Humabol pa sa Pride month, tama ‘yan,’ wag [papaapi] sa sariling bansa,” commented another Pinoy.

Palawan is a major tourist destination famous for its pristine white beaches, dramatic limestone cliffs, and rich marine life.

Pride Month is celebrated worldwide every June in commemoration of the historic 1969 Stonewall riots in New York City. It is considered a tipping point for the modern gay liberation movement.

Pride Month is held to celebrate queer culture, history, and advocacy, as well as raise awareness of their rights and struggles.
