The management of beep cards said that its special discounted concessionary cards for students, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities (PWD) will be discontinued until further notice.

The concessionary beep cards will no longer be issued to train passengers starting Monday, March 30.

The management said that the temporary discontinuation is due to the “decline in the number of concessionary beep cards issued in recent months” and “the recent 50% fare discount implemented in LRT-2 and MRT-3 stations” that started on March 23.

The Department of Transportation previously said that passengers of the MRT-3 and LRT-2 will receive a 50% fare discount to help ease commuting costs amid rising fuel prices.

The 50% discount being enjoyed by concessionary beep cards since its rollout last year will remain in effect.

The agency added that the fare discount will continue until further notice.

“Please stand by for further announcements regarding the new process for concessionary beep cards,” the beep card management said in an advisory.

“Thank you for your understanding and consideration,” it added.

The concessionary beep card is a special white discount card for train passengers that automatically grants a 50% fare discount to students, senior citizens and PWDs.

The program was rolled out by the government last year to help ease the financial burden on these passengers, as part of efforts to simplify public transport access for priority sectors and improve commuting efficiency.

The discount will apply to their bus and rail commutes until 2028, the same year President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s term ends.
