A newly installed pedestrian crossing between two shopping malls in Mandaluyong City has been welcomed by commuters who had long endured walking dangerously close to EDSA just to reach their destinations.

A Facebook page on Monday, January 19, shared a video of the pedestrian crossing between SM Megamall and Shangri-La Plaza, now properly installed without any barriers blocking commuters’ path.

For many years, pedestrians had to walk along EDSA to cross the area because fences and pipes blocked the supposed crossing point.

Although pedestrian crossing markings were present, they led directly to fences and pipes, forcing commuters to walk near the edge of EDSA and rendering the crossing useless.

In October 2025, a concerned Filipino raised awareness about the design, calling it an “inconvenience.”

Another Filipino also complained about the situation in December of the same year, noting that many commuters pass through the area.

“Kainis, ang dami tumatawid tapos ang liit ng daanan. Banggaan tuloy mga tao na magkasalubong,” the Facebook user wrote.

In the same month, another Pinoy shared a photo of the area undergoing renovation, with some fences already removed.

“Wagi ba tayo dito? Mukhang mawawala na ang Great Wall of Shangri-La at Megamall,” the Pinoy wrote with a laughing emoji.

By January, Facebook page “The Urban Roamer” shared a video of the renovated area showing the fences removed to give commuters access to the other side without walking near EDSA.

“For decades, the pedestrian crossing between Shangri-La Plaza and SM Megamall was such a pain point due to its poor placement, such that [the] sidewalk in the SM Megamall portion was practically non-existent due to an obstructing boundary wall, forcing pedestrians to walk by the side of EDSA itself,” it said.

“But finally, things have been sorted out, despite that it took a d*mn long time for it to be done, with part of the wall now demolished and opened to pedestrian traffic,” the page added.

The development was also shared in a Reddit community, where the initiative was similarly welcomed.

“At last!!!! May Ped Xing na from Shang to Mega,” a Redditor said in the “r/pinoy” community on January 20.

“The world is healing. After DECADES, they’ve finally opened a pedestrian crossing from Shang to Megamall. Now we can cross like civilized humans again,” the Reddit user added.

A similar incident was observed by commuters in 2022 along Tayuman Street in Manila.

At the time, a pedestrian crossing was blocked by railings, making it useless for those traveling to and from the Tayuman Center Mall.

The railings were later removed.

Pedestrian crossings are usually marked with white lines across the road to indicate where people can safely walk. They also serve as a visual reminder for drivers to anticipate foot traffic and slow down for commuters.
