A traffic authority personnel was called out for improper driving in a business district in Pasig City.

Automotive publication VISOR on Monday, December 15, shared a reader-submitted photo of a Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) personnel taken at Ortigas Center that morning.

The reader reported seeing the MMDA personnel perform a U-turn on a pedestrian lane along San Miguel Avenue. Pedestrian lanes are meant to provide safe crossings for pedestrians and should not be blocked by vehicles.

“Gawaing normal na talaga ‘to ng mga nasa government institutions, no? Mag-i-implement sila ng batas pero sila rin ang susuway,” the reader was quoted as saying.

The post has drawn the attention of over 4,000 Facebook users, garnering likes and reactions. It also received comments, including one from Gabriel Go, head of the MMDA’s Special Operations Group-Strike Force (SOG-SF).

“Our office is already looking for the enforcer and rest assured, proper sanction will be implemented, even issuance of traffic violation,” Go commentsed.

“The agency does not tolerate such actions of our own and agree with all that as public servants, specifically in traffic enforcement, that we should set the better example,” he added.

Republic Act 4136, or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code, requires drivers to always yield the right-of-way to pedestrians in crosswalks.

Crosswalks should not be used for parking or as lanes to perform maneuvers such as U-turns. Marked with white lines across the road, pedestrian crossings help ensure people can walk safely and serve as a visual cue for drivers to anticipate foot traffic.
