This October marks 50 years since the iconic boxing match known as the “Thrilla in Manila” was held at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, also called The Big Dome.
The legendary 1975 bout between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier is widely regarded as one of the greatest fights in boxing history and brought global attention to the Philippines.
Located in Araneta City, in Quezon City, the Big Dome is one of Asia’s largest indoor arenas, with a seating capacity of 20,000. Since its opening in 1960, it has hosted world-title boxing matches, international concerts, state functions, and cultural events. The venue’s significance was cemented by the Thrilla in Manila, making it a key site for historic events in the country.
In commemoration of the 50th anniversary, Smart Araneta Coliseum and Araneta City are participating in a nationwide celebration led by the Philippine Sports Commission, following a memorandum from Malacañang encouraging government and private sectors to join the tribute.
As part of the celebration, Araneta City will host a series of events including immersive exhibits in the Big Dome lobby and live boxing exhibitions on October 29, featuring fighters from around the world to honor the spirit of the original fight.
Irene Jose, COO of Uniprom Inc., the entertainment arm of Araneta City, said the milestone is “really special,” highlighting the venue’s role in hosting many historic moments.
“The Smart Araneta Coliseum has been part of so many unforgettable stories, from legendary concerts to historic fights. We’re proud to be the venue where the Thrilla in Manila happened, and we’re honored to be at the heart of its 50th anniversary celebration,” she said.
Meanwhile, as part of the commemoration, Pizza Hut launched a promotion offering customers free delivery when they order through its website or app using the code THRILLAINMNL. A minimum order of P500 is required. The promotion is valid until October 3.
