Roblox early this month unveiled Family Zone, an in-game experience designed to help parents and caregivers learn about the platform alongside their children and become more familiar with its safety features.
Developed by Roblox in partnership with MindTrust, Family Zone introduces parents to the platform through interactive activities that cover avatar navigation, gameplay basics, and parental controls.
The experience also includes lessons on broader online safety topics intended to support digital literacy beyond Roblox.
According to Roblox, the feature, launched July 15, was created to encourage parents and children to explore the platform together, with children guiding parents through their first experience using Roblox.
The company said many parents play online games but remain unfamiliar with Roblox’s features and settings, which may affect their ability to use parental controls.
Family Zone was designed to give parents firsthand experience with the platform while encouraging conversations about online safety at home.
The game also walks parents through Roblox’s parental control tools, including options to set screen-time limits, manage spending, choose who their child can connect with, and control access to games. Players who complete tutorials can unlock exclusive avatar items.
Roblox said it is working with safety organizations to develop additional educational modules covering topics such as scam prevention, bullying, and identifying and avoiding predatory behavior online.
Among its collaborators are mental health nonprofit Koko, game developer Playerthree and researchers from the Lab for Scalable Mental Health at Northwestern University, who are designing a game to help children and teenagers develop resilience in the face of bullying.
The company said it plans to continue adding educational content and co-play opportunities to Family Zone.
