The Facebook page of the drama-comedy film “Bar Boys” raised awareness about Best Supporting Actress winner Odette Khan‘s medical condition and provided information on how the public can support her and her family.

The veteran actress played the acclaimed role of Justice Hernandez, a “terror” yet wise law professor, in the 2017 movie. She also reprised her role in its 2025 sequel, “Bar Boys: After School.”

Odette won the “Best Supporting Actress” award at the 2025 Metro Manila Film Festival for her performance.

As of Saturday, February 28, the 79-year-old actress has been “confined and bedridden” at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) since February 21.

The information was shared by the “Bar Boys” page, which posted a statement from her daughter, Claudette Avelino-Tandoc.

“She has Pneumonia, Emphysema, Edema and fluid was drained from her right lungs last Monday,” the statement said.

“Treatment is still ongoing, and hospital bill as of today, February 27, is now at P211,000+, not including professional and readers fee, caregiving expenses, and medicines are not included yet,” Claudette added.

Pneumonia is a lung infection that inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs, causing them to fill with fluid or pus and leading to cough, fever, chills and difficulty breathing.

Meanwhile, emphysema is a progressive lung disease that causes shortness of breath and is also known as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Edema, on the other hand, is swelling caused by excess fluid trapped in the body’s tissues.

Claudette admitted that they are “running out of funds” for her mother’s confinement and treatment.

“I am appealing to your kind hearts, as Mommy Odette’s child. She has served the film and television community with all her heart for over five decades,” she said.

“If she has touched you in any way during these years and you are capable and willing to donate, we would really appreciate it. Taos-pusong pasasalamat po in advance sa mga tutulong kay Mommy Odette,” the actress’ daughter added.

She said that those willing to help may send donations via her GCash or BDO accounts.

The following are her GCash details:

Odette’s character in the “Bar Boys” franchise remains one of the most beloved in the film.

She began as a strict and formidable law professor, guiding the law school journey of Torran (Rocco Nacino), Erik (Carlo Aquino), and Christian (Enzo Pineda), and then later became their mentor.

Odette described “Bar Boys” as a special movie, drawing inspiration from her real-life experience working with the late Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago.

“Strikto siya magsalita. I had the chance to listen and to look at her… when I watched her talk, jusko, natatakot ako. I have relatives who are lawyers, pero iba pala kapag ibang tao. Matapang akong babae, pero matapang si Miriam,” the actress previously shared.

“Otherwise, you do the very hard job. [Kaya] matindi ang ‘Bar Boys’ sa’kin, hindi ko siya makakalimutan,” Odette added.

“Bar Boys” tells the story of a group of friends navigating law school, friendships and life’s challenges.

Meanwhile, a showbiz blog reported that Kapuso actress Marian Rivera was among those who extended help to the veteran actress following the appeal.
