A holdupper in Cainta, Rizal drew attention buzz for making a Catholic gesture before committing the crime of stealing cash from an Indian national.
Reports said that the male suspect, a resident of Bagong Silang in Barangay San Juan, made the Sign of the Cross before holding up an Indian national in the area on April 18.
CCTV footage showed the suspect standing in a corner of what appeared to be a residential area.
The suspect can be seen carrying a knife.
He later made a gesture to someone who was not captured on camera before hiding behind a structure.
The victim arrived shortly after and was said to have been going around the area to collect debts.
The suspect was able to steal P5,000 in cash from the Indian national.
Cesar Quiano, president of the Bagong Silang Neighborhood Association, said the crime appeared to be intentional.
“‘Yun talaga ang pakay eh. ‘Yun talaga ‘yung pakay. Inabangan niya sa eskinita na walang masyadong tao,” he said in an interview.
The suspect later emerged in the video and then walked away as if nothing had happened.
Meanwhile, the victim, who was from another area, did not file a complaint.
The neighborhood association also went to the suspect’s house in the area but did not find anyone.
They later learned that the suspect had already been jailed last February for stealing a door.
The barangay said it has tightened security in the area following the incident.
Meanwhile, the suspect’s act of making a Catholic gesture before the crime puzzled and amused some Filipinos.

“Nag-ask ng guidance. HAHAHAHAHA,” a social media user commented with a laughing emoji.
“Gabayan daw siya sana sa gagawin niyang masama,” another wrote.
“Kanino kaya humingi ng gabay at mali ang pag-sign?” a different Pinoy commented.
“Parang ‘di sanay, napilitan lang ata. Kahit papano, may takot, humingi ng gabay eh, hahahahhaha ‘yun lang, mali nga lang ginawa,” another wrote with laughing emojis.
“Nalito si Lord, e,” a different Pinoy said.
Days before that, a man from Real, Quezon also amused Filipinos in a similar way.
He dressed up a statue of former President Manuel L. Quezon, an act that violates the law protecting monuments from damage and defacement.
The suspect placed a shirt on the statue, claiming it was dirty.
