A Filipino shared a video about a grocery store’s time-based pricing scheme in an undisclosed location.

A user on the X (formerly Twitter) platform shared a video of himself and his companions visiting a grocery store, where he discovered that the prices of some items change after 7 p.m.

“Nilaro kami ng grocery store na ‘to, ang tawa ko, hahahaha,” Jayson Nueca said on February 20.

He showed a junk food item priced at P16.75 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., which then increased to P21 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

“O ‘di ba, kakaiba dito. Kailangan, kapag bibili kayo, kung magtitipid kayo, sa umaga kayo bumili, ‘wag sa gabi,” Nueca said with a laugh.

He also pointed to one of his companions, who covered his mouth to hide his reaction.

“Gulat na gulat siya sa presyo,” Nueca said.

“Lahat talaga ng presyo, ganto,” he said to the viewers, and then showed some biscuits priced at P60.25 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and P75 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Nueca’s post has earned 1.1 million views, 7,800 likes, 730 reposts and 90 replies.

One commenter tagged the Department of Trade and Industry, asking whether the pricing scheme was “legal.”

“Sabi daw para daw may pangbayad sila sa employee nila, lalo na at may guard HAHAHA,” Nueca responded.

In another response, he said that the grocery store’s air conditioner was not working.

Other users who saw his post also shared their thoughts on the possible reasons behind the time-based pricing scheme.

“Personally, this is actually smart. It accounts for night shift differential and overtime pay for workers. Also, if it’s nighttime and the grocery remains open, it becomes a convenience store. You pay for the convenience of having a mart that is open during the night,” a Pinoy wrote.

“May Night differential din,” another commented.

“May night differential daw po ang night shift,” a different X user wrote with a laughing emoji.

Night differential pay refers to the additional 10% compensation given to private sector workers who report for work between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

This differential recognizes the potential health effects of working night shifts, including disruptions to the body clock.
