The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines called on Filipinos to embrace hope and unity this Christmas, saying God draws near to restore relationships and inspire peace amid the nation’s challenges.
In his first Christmas message as CBCP president, Archbishop Gilbert Garcera of Lipa emphasized the importance of faith in a time marked by division and uncertainty.
“The heart of Christmas is this: God did not remain distant. He came closer to unite us and restore our good relationship with Him,” Garcera said.
The archbishop noted that many Filipinos carry numerous hopes—some personal, some societal—but urged reflection on the deeper meaning of the season.
He highlighted the joy of the Gospel as a source of strength that can help the Filipino people move forward together.
Garcera said Christmas is a time to recognize God’s presence in the world, even amid conflict, and to work toward reconciliation with others.
He encouraged Catholics not only to pray for themselves but also for the peace and unity of the nation.
“Let us all, not just the bishops, sincerely pray for the peace and unity of our nation,” he said.
