The head of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines offered comfort and prayer to the Diocese of Masbate following the death of Bishop Jose Bantolo.

In a letter of condolence, CBCP president Archbishop Gilbert Garcera of Lipa called Bantolo’s death “a profound loss not only for the diocese but for the whole Church.”

“His quiet dedication and thoughtful presence enriched our episcopal fraternity,” Garcera said.

Bantolo died Saturday evening at age 65. He served the Masbate diocese for 14 years, since his episcopal ordination in 2011.

“He carried out his mission with selfless leadership, marked by pastoral gentleness, steadfast faith, and a deep love for the Church and her people-especially the poor and the peripheries,” Garcera said.

Addressing the diocese’s clergy, the CBCP president said, “Your bishop walked with you, listened to you, and loved you as a true shepherd after the Heart of Christ.”

“May your memories of his pastoral care and witness sustain you in this time of sorrow,” he added.

Garcera also assured Bantolo’s family of the CBCP’s prayers, gratitude and closeness as they mourn the bishop’s death.

Bantolo’s body now lies in state in the Chapel of the Ascension at the Cathedral Grottos of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Cubao, Quezon City.

His remains will be brought to Antique on Wednesday, Dec. 17.

Details of his wake and funeral arrangements in Masbate will be posted soon, the diocese said.
