
An earthquake shook buildings, causing widespread damage when it hit Cebu on Tuesday, September 30.
Footage shows St. Peter and Paul Church on Bantayan Island in Cebu crumbling as the tremors rocked the region in the south of the country at around 10 p.m. local time.
This was posted by social media users who reported that the church was constructed in 1839 and completed in 1863.
Flames were also seen ripping through the SM Consolacion shopping mall before fire crews extinguished the blaze.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that the magnitude 6.9 earthquake was located 21 kilometers northeast of Bogo City, Cebu, at a depth of five kilometers. The quake was felt at varied intensities, with the strongest recorded at Instrumental Intensity VI and Intensity V, indicating strong shaking both indoors and outdoors.
Widespread damage to buildings was reported across the region. Phivolcs said aftershocks are expected.
