A doorbell prank by six Grade 12 students in Lipa City, Batangas, whose vehicle was fired upon by an irate homeowner, has sparked discussions among Filipinos.
Reports said a man was arrested for shooting at a vehicle carrying six teenagers, aged 17 to 19, who had rung his doorbell as a prank in the early morning of Monday, January 26.
The Batangas Police Provincial Office said the incident occurred around 2:30 a.m., when the students were dropping off a classmate at his residence while riding in a sedan.
“While waiting, one of the victims pressed the doorbell of the suspect’s residence, which may have triggered the suspect’s anger. Fearing for their safety, the driver immediately sped away from the scene,” the police were quoted in a statement.
Another report said the prank occurred while the students were waiting for one of their companions to come out of the house after the drop-off.
The suspect then went outside his home with a short firearm and fired at the vehicle from behind.
None of the students was injured or hit, but they reported the incident to their parents, who subsequently informed the Lipa Component City Police Station.
Police seized an Optimus Custom caliber .45 pistol with one standard magazine containing two live rounds of ammunition from the suspect.
The suspect is facing charges of attempted murder and violation of the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act.
Officials also reminded the public to avoid dangerous pranks that could provoke confrontation and stressed that resorting to violence is never an appropriate response in such incidents.
Meanwhile, the incident drew attention online, particularly in a Reddit community, where a post about the case earned nearly 650 upvotes and 290 comments.
Some Reddit users called out the teenagers for pulling off such a prank at their age.

“Grade 12 is equivalent to 2nd year college during my time. Mga isip bata amp***, hahaha,” a Redditor commented.
“Nung 2nd year college kami, naghahanap na kami ng part-time job eh. ‘Yung mga grade 12 ngayon, nagdi-dingdong ditch pa rin ahahahahaha,” another wrote.
“Teach your children to not harass other people kasi you never know what they’re going through and what their breaking point is. It doesn’t matter if the law is on your side if you end up dead or severely injured,” a different Redditor said.
“Note that these students are almost, if not, of legal age. Gets pa kung bata talaga ‘yang mga ‘yan pero bulbulin na, ganyan pa rin ang trip tapos madaling araw pa. F**** around and found out — buti walang nasaktan,” another Reddit user wrote.
Others said both the prank and the violent response were wrong, warning that such incidents could have ended in tragedy.
“Students receiving a free seminar about F*** Around, Find Out. They are lucky they get to go home alive. Oo, mali pa rin na mamaril. Mabuti at walang namatay. Two wrongs, walang right,” a Redditor said.
“Pang pre-teens ‘yan e. Ito namang g***, nag-doorbell lang, papatayin na. Baliw,” another said.
“Parehas mali. Lahat isip bata. ‘Yung isa, may baril,” a different Pinoy commented.
Another Reddit user argued that resorting to the use of a firearm in response to pranks “will never be acceptable.”
Former Philippine National Police chief Gen. Rommel Marbil has previously advocated a lifetime ban on firearm ownership for individuals who handle guns irresponsibly.
“Gun ownership is a privilege, not a right, and those who abuse this privilege by endangering others will face the full force of the law. Whether during the election period or not, we must all uphold responsible firearm ownership to prevent senseless violence,” he said in a 2025 interview.
Marbil also called on gun holders to exercise utmost patience and restraint, especially in heated situations, stressing that anger must never dictate one’s actions when carrying a firearm.
