Actress and television host Kim Chiu acknowledged she made a mistake after mispronouncing the name of local alternative-rock band IV of Spades during a recent noontime show episode.

The showbiz personality on Saturday, September 13 responded to an online user on the X (formerly Twitter) platform who posted a clip from the September 10 episode of the noontime show “It’s Showtime.”

The clip showed Kim calling the IV of Spades band “Ay-vee of Spades,” instead of “Four of Spades” on air, mistaking the “IV” in their name for the letters “I” and “V.”

“IV” is a Roman numeral that means “four.”

IV of Spades is a band composed of Zild Benitez, Blaster Silonga, Badjao de Castro, and Unique Salonga.

They are known for their songs “Mundo,” “Ilaw Sa Daan,” “Dulo ng Hangganan,” and ” Aura.”

Meanwhile, the online user quoted Kim and then shared face-without-mouth emojis as the perceived reaction of the band members upon hearing the wrong band name.

Kim’s response

Kim saw the post and admitted that it was an “honest mistake” on her part, adding that she does not really know them.

“‘Di ko talaga sila kilala. Kung naitama ko ‘yung pangalan nila. May magbabago ba? Mababalik ba sa’tin ‘yung ninakaw na TAX natin? I think there [are] much more [problems] in PH [Philippines] now than this na mas…” she wrote.

“This will be the last time I answer this. Right now, there are far bigger problems in our country, and even in our own lives, than nitpicking [over] small things like this. Ako nga, my surname is often misspelled as CHUI instead of CHIU………” the host added.

Kim said that she never made the misspelling of her last name an issue.

“Pero never ko naman pinapalaki or ginagawang issue. Ang hirap sa iba, instead of lifting each other up, we pull one another down. Crab mentality,” she continued with a facepalm emoji.

“[Kaya walang] pinagbago ang Pilipinas. Sana, mas piliin na lang natin magtulungan para sa ikauunlad ng lahat. Mas kailangan ng bansa natn ang boses mo doon, sa tunay na laban, sa tunay na problema, sa tunay na kalaban. Pare-pareho tayong lumaban sa buhay ng patas. Be considerate. Be kind,” Kim said.

Kim, who is of Filipino-Chinese descent, has a last name that is pronounced as “Chu.” It is written as “Chiu” in papers.

A website focusing on Chinese roots said that the name “Chiu” is a “common last name found among overseas Chinese communities around the world.”

Its associated dialects are Hakka, Cantonese, and Hokkien.
