A male passenger of a jeepney fell from the vehicle after it sharply switched lanes while reportedly plying Aurora Boulevard.
Automotive publication VISOR posted dashcam footage of an incident that allegedly occurred on June 23 at around 8 p.m.
The reader who submitted the footage claimed it happened “along Anonas-Katipunan going to Cubao,” although some readers believed it occurred along Aurora Boulevard, after Katipunan Avenue, in Quezon City.
The dashcam footage showed a jeepney in the middle lane that suddenly swerved into the left lane, causing a passenger to fall.
The dashcam-equipped vehicle later encountered the jeepney after it had stopped.
“‘Yung pasahero mo! Nalaglag! Hoy!” the driver of the dashcam-equipped vehicle exclaimed, briefly stopping his vehicle.
A motorcycle rider also stopped to check what the incident was about.
“Sir! Nakasakay sa kanya, nilaglag niya!” the driver of the dashcam-equipped vehicle said.
The rider then looked toward where the passenger had fallen and pointed to alert the jeepney driver.
“Hello. My father and I would like to send a video of an accident last June 23, around 8 p.m., along Anonas-Katipunan going to Cubao for awareness. Thank you,” the reader was quoted by VISOR as saying.
The post has garnered 4,400 reactions, over 680 shares and 640 comments from Facebook users who expressed their disappointment over the jeepney driver’s alleged reckless maneuver.
“Ito ‘yung mga tipong driver na akala mo nasa Tokyo Drift,” a Facebook user said, referring to a car movie titled “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.”
“Hype na jeepney ‘yan, masyadung kaskasero, kawawa ‘yung nahulog, malamang may pilay ‘yun, pasagot sana sa jeepney driver,” another commented.
“Jusko po! Buti hindi nabagok ang ulo,” a different Facebook user said.
“Kaskaserong jeepney driver. Walang pake na may pasahero siya,” another Filipino commented.
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has already temporarily suspended the jeepney driver’s license and placed the vehicle under alarm.
The driver will also face charges of Reckless Driving and Duty of Driver in Case of Accident, as well as being an Improper Person to Operate a Motor Vehicle.
“Kapag ang isang driver ay nagdulot ng panganib sa kanyang mga pasahero at nabigong gampanan ang kanyang responsibilidad matapos ang insidente, kinakailangan itong agad na mapanagot. Iyan ang layunin ng agarang aksyon ng LTO sa kasong ito,” LTO Assistant Secretary Markus Lacanilao said.
Some jeepney drivers in the metro are often reported for risky driving behavior, including sudden lane changes and cutting across lanes.
As professional license holders, jeepney drivers are expected to observe defensive driving practices to help ensure the safety of motorists and other road users.
Defensive driving involves safe maneuvers such as checking side mirrors and using turn signals before changing lanes, allowing time to avoid potential accidents.
