A Filipina fire inspector was commended for saving a male toddler who fell onto train tracks in Japan.
Reports said that Fire Inspector Vijoan Yumul rescued a two-year-old child who had fallen from the train platform onto the railway in Kyoto on May 29.
She said their group was coming from an event of the International Fire Chiefs’ Association of Asia in Kyoto when the incident happened.
They initially thought a mobile phone had dropped, but they later heard someone screaming.
“Pagsilip namin bata, nakahiga ‘yung bata… Talagang humiga na ako, kinuha ko ‘yung bata… siguro mga three to four feet ‘yung lalim nung railway. Hindi na ako nagdalawang-isip na kunin siya,” Yumul said.
Apart from her, another Japanese individual also helped the toddler.
Yumul was commended by the Philippine Public Safety Academy (PPSA) for her “swift and courageous action” in rescuing the two-year-old.
“FINSP YUMUL is a proud alumna and part of the PPSA Madayawlahi Class of 2025. Her response reflects the core values of PPSA — COURAGE AND SERVICE wherever duty calls,” the caption read.
“A true act of heroism that brings honor to the Academy and the nation. We salute you, FINSP YUMUL,” the academy added.
Yumul’s initiative was also hailed by some Redditors, with a post about the report receiving 1,200 upvotes, four awards and 17 comments in the “r/Philippines” community.
