Two nursing students were granted full scholarships by their school after they assisted a jeepney driver who suffered heat stroke while driving in Bocaue, Bulacan.

Dr. Yanga’s Colleges Inc (DYCI) on May 28 praised freshman students Precious Jewel Pescador and Joana Mae Barquilla for helping the driver they saw him having “difficulty breathing.”

“She sensed that he was experiencing heat stroke, so she approached him and checked his vital signs. She then provided first aid to the driver,” the college department of the school said in a post.

“The ambulance arrived after twenty minutes, and she accompanied the driver until they reached the nearest hospital. Thankfully, the driver’s condition stabilized. She was also accompanied by Joana Mae, a fellow freshman Nursing student,” it added.

The college department said Pescador was unable to take her final exam that day despite leaving home early to study.

“But what she did was far greater than simply passing an examination in a Nursing subject. She saved a life,” it said.

“Acts like these remind us that being a DYCIan is not only about excellence in academics, but also about having a heart that responds when others need help the most. Your kindness and compassion made a difference,” the college department added.

It was reported that the students were granted full scholarships by their school in recognition of their actions.

The incident also circulated on Reddit, where it has garnered 6,500 upvotes, 20 awards and 50 comments from online users.

“Serving you some good news today (because we all need it),” a Redditor wrote in the “r/Philippines” community.

Heat stroke is a potentially fatal medical emergency in which heat overwhelms the body’s ability to regulate its temperature.

Symptoms include dizziness, fainting, blurred vision, slurred speech, and confusion. If not treated immediately, heat stroke can reduce blood flow and cause damage to vital organs.
