Mission is not defined by geography but by everyday encounters at home, in communities and in society, Cardinal Jose Advincula of Manila said Tuesday.

Celebrating the feast day Mass at San Felipe Neri Parish in Mandaluyong City, he said the call to evangelization is measured not in distance but in the lived realities of people within reach of daily life.

“We do not need to go far to become missionaries. Our homes, communities, churches, and society are filled with wounded hearts, people losing hope, and those searching for the light of Christ,” Advincula said.

He urged Catholics to respond to that call not only through preaching, but through small acts of kindness, sincere concern and joyful service in ordinary situations.

The Manila archbishop said no special status or public recognition is required to share the Gospel effectively in today’s world.

“One does not need to be famous or powerful to make Jesus known. Through simple goodness, sincere concern for others, and joyful service each day, we can bring the light of Christ to others,” Advincula said.

He also pointed to St. Philip Neri as a model of community renewal rooted in joy, reconciliation and compassion. The 16th-century priest is often referred to as the “Apostle of Rome.”

Advincula encouraged the faithful to follow the saint’s example by becoming instruments of healing in families and neighborhoods often marked by division, fatigue or indifference.

The parish marked the feast with outreach efforts for jeepney and tricycle drivers affected by rising fuel costs, combining material assistance with spiritual support.

About 100 drivers from Boni, Hulo and nearby barangays received grocery packs and rice worth 1,500 pesos each, funded through parish donations and a community fun run initiative.
