As hundreds of thousands of young Catholics prepare for World Youth Day 2027, organizers in Seoul are turning to composers worldwide to help shape the gathering’s spiritual soundtrack.
The WYD Seoul 2027 Local Organizing Committee recently launched an international hymn composition contest, calling on young musicians to create liturgical music that can inspire participants during the global youth festival and serve the wider worship life of the Church.
“Come and be part of this great festival where young people gather to share love, faith, and hope through the power of music,” organizers said.
The competition seeks original hymns that embody the spirit of faith, unity and hope at the heart of the WYD while meeting Catholic liturgical standards.
Organizers said submissions must demonstrate artistic excellence while remaining accessible for young people around the world to sing. Entries must also be adaptable for both Korean and English.
Compositions may be monophonic or polyphonic, with no restrictions on length or instrumentation, provided they are suitable for liturgical use.
In a nod to authenticity and creative integrity, organizers said entries produced using generative artificial intelligence will not be accepted.
Participants are required to submit sheet music, an audio recording and a consent form available through the official event website.
Submissions are due by June 30, 2026, and must be sent electronically to the organizing committee.
Organizers also previously launched an official theme song contest for WYD Seoul 2027, though results and the winning composition have yet to be announced.
The hymn competition is part of broader preparations for WYD Seoul 2027, which is expected to draw large numbers of young pilgrims from around the globe for prayer, cultural exchange and celebration of the Catholic faith.
