Travel has become more costly as fuel prices have surged due to the global oil crisis stemming from the conflict in the Middle East.

With that in mind, Catholic residents of Quezon City were given alternative ways to observe “Visita Iglesia” this Holy Week without spending heavily on gas.

Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte suggested that Filipinos try a “walkable” Visita Iglesia, where participants would walk no more than 11 kilometers visiting churches across the city.

The Visita Iglesia is a Catholic tradition in which the faithful visit at least seven churches on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday as a form of pilgrimage.

Some offer prayers to the Blessed Sacrament, while others pray the Stations of the Cross in each church.

The choice of visiting seven churches is believed to symbolize either the Seven Last Words of Jesus or His Seven Holy Wounds.
