A food delivery rider was praised for pausing to pay respect during a flag ceremony in an unspecified barangay.
A Reddit user on Monday, November 3, shared that they encountered a GrabFood rider who surprised them while delivering their coffee order.
“Pagdating ni kuya rider sa location ko, sakto namang may ongoing flag ceremony sa barangay namin since it’s the first Monday of the month,” Redditor “Manako_Osho” shared in the “r/pinoy” community.
Local government units hold flag ceremonies every Monday, during which the national anthem, “Lupang Hinirang,” is sung while participants place their right hand over their chest.
“Nung inabot niya na sa’kin ‘yung order, nag-stay muna ako sandali. To my surprise, si sir, tumigil din at nagbigay galang habang tinutugtog ang Lupang Hinirang bago siya umalis,” the Redditor shared.
“Nakakatuwa lang kasi may mga tao pa rin na hindi nakakalimot magbigay-pugay sa ating Pambansang Awit. Mabuhay ka, sir!” the Reddit user continued.
The Redditor said they gave the rider a tip.
“Wholesome,” they said as a title of their post.
The post has earned 2,900 upvotes and over 70 comments from Redditors, with some sharing their own similar experiences of noticing others’ behavior whenever the national anthem is played in public.
“I watched a movie at Uptown Mall BGC [Bonifacio Global City] a few months back [and] there were some conyo kids na ‘di tumayo when ‘Lupang Hinirang’ was played. Nainis ako e, but didn’t make a scene out of it,” one Reddit user shared.
“I remember attending festivals in both the Capital City of the Philippines and somewhere in the Visayas. During the playing of the Philippine National Anthem, I noticed that many young people completely ignored it,” another wrote.
“In fact, I remember one young person even said, ‘Anong pake mo?’ (Simply meaning, ‘Mind your own business.’) Truly, your commendation for the person you’ve recognized is well-deserved and a testament to patriotism,” the Redditor added.
“Former member of the Philippine Coast Guard reserve corp here. May nadaanan akong Flag Ceremony sa isang fire station sa Makati. I stopped walking and Saluted the flag until matapos,” another shared
“Kitang kita ko pinagtatawanan at mina-mock ng mga estudyanteng napadaan sa likod ko ‘yung ginawa ko. Wala lang naman sa’kin pero I was highly disappointed, nakakatawa na pala sa kabataan ang bigay pugay sa flag ceremony. Oh well,” the Redditor continued.
Republic Act 8941, also known as the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines, mandates that “everyone in the premises shall come to attention” when the first note of the national anthem is played.
“Moving vehicles shall stop. All persons present shall place their palms over their chest, those with hats shall uncover,” the law said.
“When the National Anthem is played at a public gathering, whether by a band or by singing or both, or reproduced by any means, the attending public shall sing the anthem. The singing must be done with fervor,” it added.
“As a sign of respect, all persons shall stand at attention and face the National Flag, if there is one displayed, and if there is none, they shall face the band or the conductor. At the first note, all persons shall execute a salute by placing their right palms over their chests,” the law said.
