The Department of Health advised the public to take preventive measures to avoid illnesses as the country enters the “amihan” (northeast monsoon) season.
State weather bureau PAGASA on Monday, October 27 declared the onset of the “amihan” season, which brings cooler, drier air and lower temperatures.
PAGASA also noted that the season may bring rough sea conditions and shear lines, a weather phenomenon that occurs when warm and cold air masses meet, often resulting in rain and thunderstorms.
“Amihan” generally lasts from October until early March.
These changes in the weather can cause people to feel unwell.
The DOH shared tips on how Filipinos can prevent common illnesses during the “Amihan” season, such as flu, colds, pneumonia, allergic rhinitis, and dry skin.
It said that the public can stay healthy during the cooler season by regularly washing their hands, wearing a face mask, staying home if they have symptoms, drinking plenty of water, and applying lotion or moisturizer to prevent skin dryness.
The government agency also provided specific tips on how people can prevent and manage flu, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis (eczema).
The DOH also advised Filipinos to consult their nearest health center for proper guidance and care.
Meanwhile, changes in the weather can affect a person’s health.
A physician explained that such shifts can challenge the body, including the immune system.
“Our bodies get used to a certain climate, and when those things change suddenly, our body has to try to adapt,” physician Vikash Modi was quoted as saying in a report.
“Unfortunately, sometimes our bodies have a difficult time adjusting, which can trigger illness,” he added.
