Retired Bishop Warlito Cajandig of Calapan died Tuesday, Oct. 21, in Iloilo City. He was 81.
The Apostolic Vicariate of Calapan said the bishop passed away at 7:18 a.m., seven years after suffering a “debilitating stroke” in September 2018 that left him in a coma.
“May Bishop Cajandig’s witness of missionary love, humble service, and steadfast faith continue to inspire us toward a more faithful and vibrant synodal Church,” said Bishop Moises Cuevas, the current bishop of Calapan.
Cajandig led the vicariate for 33 years, from 1989 until the Vatican “liberated” him from his office for health reasons in November 2022. He was 78 at the time.
Ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Capiz in 1970, he was appointed vicar apostolic of Calapan in April 1989 and ordained bishop on June 21 of the same year.
Cuevas asked the clergy and faithful to pray for the eternal repose of Cajandig’s soul.
Funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming days, the vicariate said.
