A terrified family cowered in their kitchen as a magnitude 6 earthquake jolted their home in the Philippines.

The residents were having breakfast when the tremor struck their wooden home in Cantilan town, Surigao del Sur province, this morning, October 17.

Footage shows refrigerators and water containers shaking while the family were seated at their dining table.

This was also reported by Radyo Pilipinas.

“Malakas na pagyanig ang naramdaman at nairekorda sa kalapit na Cantilan, Surigao Del Sur,” it said.

State seismological agency Phivolcs reported the magnitude 6 quake struck 13 kilometers (8 miles) southeast of General Luna, Surigao del Norte, at 7:03 am local time, at a depth of 28 kilometers (17 miles).

No tsunami warnings were raised but damage and aftershocks were expected, the agency added.

Authorities have suspended inter-island travel, port relations, and all sea-related activities as a precaution.

The Philippines has been rattled by a series of earthquakes in recent weeks, including a magnitude 6.9 tremor on September 30 that left at least 76 dead in Cebu province.

The Philippines is an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands inside the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where the majority of Earth’s volcanic eruptions and earthquakes happen.
