Filipinos raised concerns over a content creator offering services to craft students’ thesis papers with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) tools.

On Thursday, August 20, an X (formerly Twitter) user reshared a video posted by Realyn Manalo, known online as “Your Thesis Bestie,” promoting her thesis-related services.

“[P5,000] papagawa ng thesis??? Ta’s ChatGPT prompts gamit? Bawal pa revisions?” the X user commented with loudly crying emojis.

ChatGPT, an AI program developed by OpenAI, can generate dialogue and respond to user inquiries by processing and analyzing data through machine learning. It is capable of performing tasks ranging from writing posts and composing music to creating AI art and solving equations.

Meanwhile, the X user also shared another video of Manalo introducing herself and claiming to have graduated cum laude.

The online user pointed out a grammatical mistake in her introduction.

“I was graduate,” they commented with a crying emoji.

In the comments section of a TikTok content Manalo posted on July 15, she was asked by an online user if she has the “capacity” to “make a research without relying too much on AI.”

Manalo answered by referring the user to her “Chapter 1-5 builder” playlist on her TikTok account.

“Makikita mo doon how I use AI tools,” she responded.

Manalo also said that students who want her “help” in their thesis papers must be allowed by the school to use AI in their research.

“If hindi naman, dapat willing ka mag-word na gawa ko, kasi ‘di naman porket gumamit ako ng AI, mali na ‘yung ginawa ko eh,” she said.

Some online users expressed concern over Manalo’s content, calling it “unethical.”

“How is this ethical… ” an X user commented.

“Jusko, bagsak agad sa TURNITIN and Ethics Review,” another X user exclaimed. Turnitin is a plagiarism checking tool that checks a student’s work for originality.

“The academic integrity left the group,” another said.

“Mahihinang nilalang lang gagamit ng ChatGPT for thesis, nung kami sariling research at docu, at utak gamit, mas madali siya i-defend kapag ikaw talaga mismo gumawa, ‘yun nga lang puyat kalaban mo, haha,” a different Pinoy commented.

Another claimed to have seen a sample of Manalo’s AI prompt, saying that they “do not understand it.”

On Manalo’s website, she claims to “discuss or showcase the responsible use of AI tools for research” in her services.

“It is not intended to promote academic dishonesty. All resources shared here are meant to assist and guide students ethically,” she wrote.

Manalo also said that she is “not liable for any academic penalties, data loss, or other issues that may arise” from using the content or services provided on her website.

Meanwhile, a tenured professor notes that using ChatGPT for a research paper “can be utilized for idea generation and formulating concise statements.”

“However, it is crucial to never rely on information generated by ChatGPT without proper fact-checking. Over-reliance on ChatGPT should be avoided,” an article from Master Academia, a website run by a tenured professor, reads.

“Additionally, it is important to be aware of the ethical challenges that may arise, such as addressing bias and discrimination, ensuring transparency, privacy protection, and accountability when inputting information into the system,” it added.

“The ethical implications of using ChatGPT in research depend on its usage. Employing ChatGPT for brainstorming or structuring a manuscript may be considered ethical,” the article also said.

“However, relying solely on information generated by ChatGPT is unethical. Furthermore, feeding your research and data into the system can present ethical challenges related to transparency, privacy, and data security,” it added.
