Visitors of a zoo in Rodriguez, Rizal, paid heartfelt tribute to Joey, a male Bornean Orangutan who passed away on August 14.

In a statement posted on Facebook last week, Avilon Zoo announced the sudden passing of one of their “oldest and most beloved animals,” Joey.

“Joey, who was over 40 years old, passed away from complications due to old age. He was a significant part of Avilon for much of his life, having been with us even before the zoo officially opened to the public,” the zoo said.

“Known for his big personality, whether it was his mischievous charm or his calm nonchalance, Joey was truly one of a kind. He will forever remain a cherished part of our zoo’s legacy,” it added.

“We are grateful for being given the privilege of knowing and caring for him, and we know that both our staff and visitors will miss him dearly,” it concluded.

The zoo also invited those who have met Joey to join them in honoring him by sharing their memories.

Many patrons then extended their gratitude and shared memories with Joey.

Some also shared photos with Joey, saying the orangutan was part of their children’s core memories.

“Thank you for being part of my kids’ memories Joey. You are now free in paradise,” a Facebook user said.

“Oh no Joey. You are special to me,” another commented.

“Rip Joey. Thank you for making my kids happy during our visit,” a patron wrote.

“My kids love Joey .. enjoyed feeding him and just playing with him from a distance,” another shared.
