A string of thefts targeting Catholic parish churches in Benguet has prompted the Diocese of Baguio to issue an urgent security warning.

In a notice to parishes dated March 15, the diocese said sacred vessels — including chalices and censers — were stolen from at least four churches between January and February.

“We urge all parishes to review their security protocols and ensure that sacred vessels and liturgical items are properly secured when not in use,” the diocese said.

Among the affected churches were the Conversion of St. Paul Parish in Tuba, where a candle stand, censer and boat, and altar server items were taken; Immaculate Conception Parish in Sablan, which lost a censer and boat; and Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Brgy.Tuding, Itogon, where a chalice and other items were stolen.

An ordination chalice was also reported missing from St. John Bosco Parish in Baguio.

The diocese said the pattern of incidents suggests the thefts may be deliberate and “targeted,” raising concerns the items could be resold through illicit channels.

“If you are offered any liturgical items for sale from unofficial sources, or if you have information regarding the missing items, please contact the Curia Information Office or the concerned parishes,” it said.
