Teachers were reminded of their code of ethics regarding political opinions after some were found to have posted online in support of a presidential bid.

Some social media users highlighted teachers expressing support for Vice President Sara Duterte’s 2028 presidential campaign following her announcement to run for higher office in the upcoming elections.

Her announcement comes amid impeachment complaints over alleged misuse of millions in confidential funds and her father’s pre-trial proceedings at the International Criminal Court.

Duterte also cited the “clamor” of her supporters as a factor in her decision to run for president, as well as her dissatisfaction with how the current administration is handling the country’s issues.

Following her announcement, some teachers expressed support for the vice president on social media.

An online user noticed these posts and publicly called them out.

“‘Tahimik lang, pero excited kami!’ Tapos ‘yung iba diyan, DepEd teachers pa nga yata,” the X (formerly Twitter) user said, compiling TikTok posts of some educators.

A similar post was also made in a Reddit community, where a user called out a teacher for expressing support for Duterte’s presidential bid.

A Reddit user claiming to be a LET taker said that “teachers should remain non-partisan.” LET refers to the Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers.

“You may exercise your right to vote, but you’re prohibited to engage in any political campaigns. This is a clear violation of COE,” the Redditor commented, referring to the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers.

The Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers details teachers’ conduct as “duly licensed professionals who possess dignity and reputation with high moral values as well as technical and professional competence.”

Article III, Section 5 states the following:

A teacher shall not engage in the promotion of any political, religious, or other partisan interest, and shall not, directly, or indirectly, solicit, require, collect, or receive any money, service, other valuable material from any entity for such purposes.

Article III, Section 8 likewise states:

A teacher shall not use his position or official authority or influence to coerce any other person to follow any political course of action.

The code states that any violation of any of its provisions “shall be sufficient ground” for the teacher to face disciplinary action consisting of the revocation of their license, suspension from the teaching profession, reprimand, or cancellation of their temporary or special permit.
