As conversations around artist rights gain traction in the Philippine music scene, Filipino R&B king Jay R is adding his voice to a growing chorus calling out long-standing industry imbalances.
According to the artist, these issuesnow mirror the themes of his latest film, “Songs For Selina.”
The renewed scrutiny follows allegations from MRLD, who recently spoke about her departure from OC Records. Her claims of unfair compensation and limited support have sparked wider discussions online about transparency, contracts, and how emerging artists are treated.
‘Uncomfortable truths’
For Jay R, the situation is far from new.
In a TikTok video that has since gained over a million combined views across platforms, the R&B veteran reflected on what he described as the “uncomfortable truths” of the industry, particularly for artists just starting out.
“I’ve been in this industry for more than 20 years, and situations like this really do happen to artists,” Jay R said.
“It has happened to me as well. When you’re starting out, you enter record deals and contracts without fully understanding what’s written in them. Sometimes, you don’t really comprehend the terms,” he added.
On contracts, control
Jay R emphasized that one of the most critical gaps for new artists is a lack of legal awareness when signing deals, something he believes can leave them vulnerable.
“That’s why it’s important for artists to carefully read their contracts,” he added.
“You should have a lawyer and review everything line by line. You need to understand exactly what you’re getting into. It’s a harsh truth about the industry, but it’s real. And honestly, I think it’s perfect timing that this issue has come to light. Artists need to be educated about what really happens behind closed doors,” the artist said.
His message centers not just on accountability from labels, but also on equipping artists with the tools to protect themselves.
‘Songs for Selina’
The timing of the controversy closely aligns with the release of “Songs For Selina, “a music-driven film produced by and starring Jay R. While fictional, the story explores issues that now feel strikingly familiar: exploitation, creative ownership, and the cost of speaking out.
“Artists sometimes fear being marginalized or even blacklisted when they speak about the truth,” Jay R shared.
“The story of Songs For Selina comes from real experiences: ours and the stories of fellow artists who have lived through these realities,” he added.
Starring Rachel Coates and Jay R’s wife, Mica Javier, the film delves into the pressures artists face behind the spotlight, where ambition and survival often intersect.
“Songs For Selina” opened in Ayala Cinemas nationwide last Wednesday, March 18.
