Actress Kim Chiu has no alibi for passing up a daring new role in a new Filipino drama series.
For Kim, portraying Stella Marie Morales in “The Alibi” is proof of her versatility as an actress.
The series follows Vincent, heir to a news outlet, and Stella, who team up to navigate their challenges. After being accused of murder, Vincent, played by Paulo Avelino, hires Stella, an escort working hard to support her family, to serve as his alibi.
“Gusto ko lang magpakita ng bago. Sa mga nagsasabing hindi ako marunong sa ganitong klaseng role, ito na. Ito na ‘yun,” Kim said during the media conference in “The Alibi’s” Blue Carpet Premiere on November 4.
“So, I want to prove all of them wrong, and I can do more than what they know,” the actress emphasized.
While she enjoys playing “teeny” characters, Kim explained that she wanted to take on a more mature role.
“Siguro naman as a 35-year-old woman, tapos na tayo sa 16-years old-role na teeny, teeny. Pero favorite ko talaga mag-teeny-teeny, magpakatawa,” she said.
“Pero, parang ‘pag tinatrack ko ‘yung journey ko dito sa industriyang ito, parang nahati ko naman na siya sa teens, twenties. Sabi ko, anong napakita ko sa aking thirties? It’s my skin,” she added.
In a scene from the first episode, Kim removed her top while dancing on stage under bright, flickering lights, exposing her back to Paulo and the camera.
However, she stressed that it was “more than the skin,” adding that she wanted to show “what’s inside me and what I want to show to all my supporters.”
Paulo echoed the same sentiment, saying that the focus was not on the skin, but on the maturity and depth of the character she needed to portray.
“Minsan talaga may mga character at may mga storya na gustong ikuwento at sa mga ganitong paraan kailangan,” the actor said.
“Dahil kung nagbebenta naman talaga ng aliw ‘yung character, ang hirap naman kung hindi mo nakikita or napapanood [ito] at hindi naipapakita sa audience na hindi niya ginagawa ‘yun,” he added.
The KimPau loveteam has previously starred in projects such as “Linlang,” the Filipino adaptation of “What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim,” and “My Love Will Make You Disappear.”
Director Jojo Saguin revealed that, despite Kim not undergoing a workshop, she was enthusiastic and open to taking on the role.
“Makikita mo yung maturity…She did it very well. Ang galing-galing talaga niya,” Saguin said.
Other cast members include Sam Milby, John Arcilla, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Sofia Andres, Rafael Rosell, Robbie Jaworski and Angelina Cruz.
The series, produced by ABS-CBN’s Dreamscape Entertainment, was also directed by Onat Diaz and FM Reyes.
The series premiered on November 7 on Prime Video, with two episodes releasing every Friday.
