Songs often mirror the highs of infatuation and the soul-wrecking lows of heartbreak and abandonment.
It is no different for the members of P-pop group The Juans, who channel their own “hugot” into the music of their latest album, drawn from the transitions they are currently going through.
Their new album “Tawid,” is a reflection their individual “tawid moments,” a term they use to describe emotional crossings or turning points in life. These stories come from lead vocalist and keyboardist Carl Guevarra, vocalist and lead guitarist Japs Mendoza, vocalist and bassist Chael Adriano and vocalist and acoustic guitarist RJ Cruz.
The album features 10 tracks and was released today, September 12.
“Ang isang guiding light po namin ay gusto naming sumulat from a place where we actually are. Kung nasaan kami at this point of life,” Carl said.
“Kung saan kami sa edad namin, sa emotional state namin, sa pinagdadaanan namin sa buhay, ganyan. Gusto namin magsulat from there,” he added.
The group emphasized that the album was not just for the people they perform for, but “it’s also for us,” underscoring the album’s personal meaning.
For The Juans, both the songwriting process and live show preparations were part of their “Tawid” moments.
Carl said they stepped to a new level in their career as they marked their 10th anniversary.
Beyond connecting with audiences through relatable lyrics, the group also hopes to offer a space for spiritual reflection.
As artists who first served as musicians in their church, The Juans wanted their music to guide listeners toward healing and reconnection with God.
“Alam namin na ‘yung mga songs namin, may certain depth and may certain hatak siya for people to be vulnerable. We don’t want to waste the moment [when] people are open and people are vulnerable,” Carl said.
“As they expose their brokenness, we don’t just want to stop there…We believe that it is only God [who] can heal broken hearts. And therefore, we really create that space,” he added.
According to the lead vocalist, they wanted to prove that they create songs that narrate the transition from “hugot” feelings to moving on.
