What you need to know: Newly discovered human species in Cagayan

A group of researchers led by Filipino archaeologist Armand Salvador Mijares discovered a new ancient human species inside Callao Cave in Cagayan.

The remains have been called Homo luzonensis and were estimated to be 50,000 to 67,000 years old.

The discovery is considered a major breakthrough in the study of human evolution.
