LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines — A suspected New People’s Army commander was killed in an encounter with government troops in Oas, Albay Wednesday morning, a sketchy report reaching Camp Simeon, headquarters of the Bicol police, said.

Chief Inspector Arthur Gomez, Albay police investigation division chief, said the clash occurred in Barangay Talisay at 6:30 a.m. when troops from Bravo Company of the 83rd Infantry Battalion and the 97th Military Intelligence Company on combat patrol ran into five rebels.

The slain alleged rebel was identified as Deomides Apiniado, alias Ka Delio, who commanded an NPA section operating in the towns of Guinobatan, Ligao, Oas, Pio Duran, Polangui and Libon.

A .45-caliber pistol, hand grenade, anti-government documents and personal belongings were recovered from Apiniado.
