A Filipino filmmaker helped create visual effects for American pop singer Olivia Rodrigo‘s music video for “The Cure.”

Eddie Dela Peña shared that he recently worked on the visuals for one of her latest singles from her album, “you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love.”

He said he collaborated with Pretend VFX to bring the visual effects to life.

Eddie described the experience as one for the books, especially as an Olivia fan.

“Had the absolute pleasure of working on the VFX for Olivia’s latest music video, along with PRETEND VFX. As an Olivia Rodrigo fanboy, I am so excited to share this with you, guys,” he said in a Facebook post.

“I wouldn’t even be in a position to take on opportunities like this without the guidance and mentorship I’ve received from my boss, Elyson Edourd G. Caranza, and Direk Mark Putian, over the last couple of years,” Eddie added, tagging some people.

“To Angel Vi Manong, the love of my life, thank you for being always there to support me,” he continued.

“And all my friends and family, this one is for you, guys! And more to come!!” Eddie exclaimed.

He also shared his experience on TikTok, along with a throwback photo of himself editing on a laptop in 2014.

Eddie then posted a recent photo of himself working on Olivia’s music video.

In the comments section, the filmmaker shared more details, including how he got the opportunity to work with her.

“I have a history of collaborating with the VFX team! (PRETEND VFX). They’re also the team behind the film ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ (One of my faves, btw). They brought me on board for a music video project. Only to find out it was for Olivia. I screamed,” Eddie wrote.

“‘Everything Everywhere All at Once” is a 2022 independent absurdist comedy-drama that earned several Academy Awards, including Best Picture, in 2023.

Meanwhile, the music video for Olivia’s “The Cure” features the singer as a mid-century nurse frantically attempting to cure a broken heart.

The music video celebrates all things handmade, with digital effects added to “supplement and enhance the handmade feel,” according to Lana Kim, founder of the Ways & Means creative studio and production company.

“The sets were fully handmade, and the elements hand-animated, but to combine these worlds, we needed some CG,” she said in an interview.

“So we partnered up with our friends at Pretend VFX to seamlessly incorporate the stop motion work with the live action, and enhance the world we had already built and captured in-camera,” Lana added.
