Several Catholic mission stations in the southern Philippines have been severely damaged after a strong earthquake flattened chapels, triggered landslides and cut off island and coastal communities from aid and communication.
The Society of the Divine Word reported that its mission sites on Balut and Sarangani islands sustained extensive destruction, including a partially damaged convent and several chapels that were completely leveled by the quake.
At least four people were also killed and several others injured, including two priests who suffered minor injuries and are now safe, according to the SVD Philippines Southern Province Task Force.
The congregation said access to the affected areas remains extremely difficult. Landslides have blocked major roads, while rough seas have prevented boats from reaching the islands, leaving military helicopters as the only means of transport.
“Access to Balut Island remains extremely difficult,” the SVD said June 9. “The roads in Mindanao leading to the port that connects to the island are currently impassable, and rough sea conditions have prevented any vessels from reaching the island today.”
The congregation added that many communities remain without electricity and water, while damaged roads have left residents isolated from relief efforts.
Municipalities beyond Glan, including Nuing — the congregation’s newest mission station — remain completely isolated, the task force said June 19.
“The situation remains critical,” it said. “There is currently no electricity, no water supply, and access to Nuing is impossible as all roads leading to the area are blocked or destroyed.”
Initial assessments indicate it could take weeks to rehabilitate damaged roads and restore essential services, including electricity, the congregation said.
The SVD said it continues to coordinate relief and emergency response efforts with missionaries and local authorities despite limited access to affected communities.
“We continue to assess the needs of the affected communities and to provide assistance wherever possible,” the task force said.
The congregation also appealed for prayers for the victims, injured survivors, displaced residents and missionaries working in the disaster zone.
“We kindly ask for your prayers for all those affected by this devastating earthquake, especially the families of the victims, the injured, and those who have lost their homes and places of worship,” it said.
