A local perfume store said that it will implement stricter supervision and quality control of its products after conducting an audit amid concerns over “methanol” content.

Scent Therapy PH, which has over 15,000 followers on Instagram, announced that it has discovered a “specific shipment of alcohol provided by a former supplier” did not meet its “strict technical specifications.”

“While our standards have always explicitly prohibited methanol use, it has become clear that standard industry documentation can occasionally be inconsistent with the actual materials delivered,” it said in a post on Wednesday, March 25.

“We determined that relying solely on supplier-provided documents is no longer sufficient to meet the high bar we set for our products,” the perfume seller added.

The store vowed to enforce stricter quality control following the incident, amid the viral concerns over methanol content in its perfumes.

“Rather than accepting these industry-wide challenges, we are taking this opportunity to implement a higher level of supervision and quality control,” Scent Therapy PH said.

“We terminated our relationship with our former alcohol supplier and are currently in the process of independent, third-party laboratory verification for all raw materials entering our facility. This ensures that our internal standards are never compromised by external variables,” it added.

The store also said it has initiated a voluntary recall of the January batch of its Sandalwood variant and has temporarily halted sales while finalizing enhanced testing protocols.

“If you purchased Sandalwood from the affected January batch, please contact our support team directly to arrange for a full refund or further assistance,” it said.

“We thank you for your continued support as we implement these industry-leading safeguards to ensure that every bottle we produce remains a benchmark for quality,” Scent Therapy PH added.

The perfume brand drew online attention after a TikTok account claimed that a Scent Therapy PH product contained “high” methanol levels, based on testing.

Before the claim went viral, the brand had reassured its buyers that it uses a “special denatured alcohol from a licensed supplier” and that all of its products were “FDA registered.”

Scent Therapy PH later conducted an internal audit and issued a statement addressing the matter.

Methanol is said to be “extremely toxic” when used as an ingredient in perfume and can cause “blindness, organ damage, and death even in small amounts absorbed through skin,” according to a chemical manufacturing and distribution company.
