Incidents of Filipinos receiving coins of different foreign currencies during transactions came to light after an online user shared receiving a Thai coin.

On Friday, February 6, an X (formerly Twitter) user shared receiving an unusual coin as change during a transaction with a vendor.

“Bumili ako ng food kay kuya vendor sa labas ng office ko at binulsa ko agad ‘yung sukli, ‘di ko napansin na ibang currency binigay sa’kin,” the X user wrote in a post with a loudly crying emoji.

The coin, which resembled a P10 coin, was reportedly a Thai baht.

Similar to the P10 coin, it had a gold-colored center with a silver edge.

Meanwhile, the post has garnered one million views, 18,000 likes, 1,000 bookmarks, 804 reposts and 122 replies from other online users, including Filipinos who claimed to have similar experiences.

“Nung una, nainis ako dito sa sukli na ‘to. Not until nakita ko post mo,” another wrote, sharing a photo of a euro coin.

Another X user reported receiving a coin of Danish currency.

“Same here! Akala ko P5 sinukli,” the X user commented.

Another X user shared receiving an unusual coin during a jeepney ride, saying they only noticed it after they had already alighted.

A different online user likewise got a Thai coin as fare change on a jeepney commute.

Another X user also received a Thai coin.

“Same, may ganito din ako, pinaglalaruan lang ng pusa ko,” the user wrote with a loudly crying emoji.

Another Pinoy, meanwhile, said they nearly handed a euro coin to a tricycle driver.

“Babayad na ako sa tricycle then nakita ko, ba’t iba ‘yung likod ng coin na 10 pesos. ‘Yun pala, euros siya,” the user said.

In the Philippines, foreign coins cannot be exchanged for pesos, only bills.

In 2023, a Reddit user asked travelers what they do with the foreign coins they still have when returning to the Philippines.

Some keep them as mementos, while others set them aside for future use if they visit the country again.
