A promotion by a retail warehouse club chain in the Philippines gained attention after reports emerged that some shoppers were hoarding and reselling its muffins.
Online posts highlighted the hoarding and reselling of S&R’s “Buy One Take One” (B1T1) muffin promotion, with some Facebook users saying they had noticed the practice even before the recent buzz.
A “Buy One Take One” promo allows a customer to purchase an item at full price and receive another item either for free or at a significant discount.
“Matagal ko na ngang napapansin itong ‘hoarding’ na ito ng Buy 1 Take 1 ng muffins sa S&R!” an online user wrote, sharing screengrabs of posts on the Meta-owned Threads platform where some reported witnessing the reselling of the baked goods.
“Tapos makikita ko sa mga local coffee shops ang muffins na ‘yan. So, let’s say P250 ang per pack, so P31.25 lang bawat isa (4 per pack x 2). Tapos ibinebenta ng at least P90 each ‘yan sa coffee shops. Hahaha. Ok lang kung mabenta rin agad. Kung hindi??” the Threads user added.

Another X user shared a photo of “restocked” muffins at one of S&R’s branches.
Huwag na kayong mag-away-away kasi madami na ulit stock ang S&R ng muffins nilang lasang minatamis na papel. Sugod mga kafatid.

Meanwhile, some argued that purchasing and reselling items is a common strategy among businesspeople.
“But that’s what’s done everywhere. Buy in bulk at a good price and resell. You can question the markup, but all of this is ordinary. Price is determined by buyers. If nobody is willing to buy, the price will come down,” an X user wrote.
“How is this controversial???? Ever bought bulk items at a whole sale price in places like Divisoria to stock up your sari-sari store? Re-selling per item at higher price to cover cost (e.g transpo/repack/labor/overheads),” another commented.
“Matagal ng kalakaran to, is this illegal or not? Parang bumili ka sa Divisoria then ibebenta mo per piece with patong! Talamak ang ganito nung pandemic,” a different X user wrote.
S&R has not publicly commented on the issue as of this writing.
The retail warehouse club chain is known for its baked goods, including muffins in various flavors such as Chocolate Chip, Choco Pecan, Blueberry, Triple Choco and Espresso Walnut, which are described as having a “puffy and cakey finish.”
