State seismological agency Phivolcs reported the magnitude 6 quake struck 13 kilometres (8 miles) southeast of General Luna, Surigao del Norte at 7:03 a.m. local time, at a depth of 28 kilometers (17 miles).

No tsunami warnings were raised but damage and aftershocks were expected, the agency added.

Authorities have suspended inter-island travel, port relations, and all sea-related activities as a precaution.

The Philippines has been rattled by a series of earthquakes in recent weeks, including a magnitude 6.9 tremor on September 30 that left at least 76 dead in Cebu province.

The Philippines is an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands inside the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where the majority of Earth’s volcanic eruptions and earthquakes happen.
