Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) showcased their talents during a benefit concert aimed at raising awareness and promoting acceptance of neurodivergent young adults.
“Sounds of Change 2,” organized by the Best Buddies Philippines Foundation Inc. (BBPFI) and The Bistro Group, provided a platform for people with IDD to showcase their musical talents, according to BBPFI Executive Director Michelle Aventajado.
“Music is something that the buddies identify with; it brings people together all the time. It is meant to create change in the community,” Aventajado said.
BBPFI is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for neurodivergent individuals. Meanwhile, The Bistro Group is one of the country’s leading restaurant chains, operating TGI Fridays, Italianni’s, and Texas Roadhouse.
In collaboration with the De La Salle College of St. Benilde (DLS-CSB) Music Production Program (MPP) Department, the young adults with IDD received support, technical guidance, and assistance for the concert, including setlist development.
“This initiative is a shining example of how educational institutions can leverage their resources and expertise to create meaningful, inclusive, and transformative experiences for individuals with diverse abilities,” Patrick Frias, the DLS-CSB-MPP department chair, said.
“It demonstrates the power of music as a universal language and a powerful tool for social inclusion and personal growth,” he added.
The event showcased the talents of Limitles5, a band composed of BBPFI artists Alex Soriano, Clarence Cruz, Ian Borleo, Nep Gonzales III and Sky Jacoba. Yana Penaga and Sam Jacoba were also part of the group.
Limitles5 performed nine songs, including “Your Man,” “You’ll Be in My Heart,” and “With a Smile.”
BBPFI artist Anouck Weber-Tantoco also presented her original song, “Butterflies,” with her band Anouck and A to Z.
